For the thousands of MICHEL LE GRAND fans (or better still they should be called fanatics), here is a new and unexplored side of his musical genius. Up to the release of this Mercury Long Play record, LeGrand has been considered the builder of musical castles— pretty, ethereal arrangements featuring highs that thrill any tweeter. Here is the modern, progressive LeGrand!

Hére is LeGrand using an augmented dance band set-up. In addition to the trumpet and trombone ensemble, reed section and rhythm section, you will hear combinations of these sections . . . outstanding soloists from among the top French instrumentalists. There are outstanding solo passages on trumpet, alto sax and tenor sax.

LeGrand grandiosely utilizes contrasts, with the listener spellbound, as in the midst of an eïight-bar portion, he switches from blasting brass to only a muted trumpet. There's interesting dischord. There are overtones of Darius Milhaud and even Prokofiev.

This is LeGrand arranging and conducting with the same imaginative wand that has made for such colorful listening from names like Billy May, Sauter-Finnegan and Mercury's own Pete Rugolo. |
